Hair Claws: The 90s Trend We Can't Get Enough Of

Endless styles, incredibly convenient, and looks good on everyone; here's everything you need to know about the resurgence of this trend.

From low-rise trousers to tube tops and beaded necklaces, it's no secret that 90s and Y2K styles have been on the rise in the last couple of years. Whether you're all for a throwback, or think these trends are past trends for a reason (we're looking at you, razor-thin eyebrows), there's no denying they're here to stay.

But our favourite 90s trend that's made a reappearance? Hair claws.

Endless styles, incredibly convenient, and looks good on everyone; here's everything you need to know about the resurgence of this trend.

Where it all began

Where it all began

When you first picture iconic hair claw styles, you'll probably think of Rachel Green from Friends, or your mum, who would buy them out of practicality. But now, the hair claw has found its way into modern mainstream style, and you can find them everywhere from runways to Boots.

After first making a comeback thanks to Alexander Wang during his 2018 Fall show, where models sported silver claws printed with the designer's name on the runway, fashions IT girls snapped them up and haven't let go since.

Model Bella Hadid is rarely seen without a hair claw, so much so that it's become her signature look. Hadid usually favours a large claw clip, paired with the slicked-back hair that inspired the "That Girl" trend and "The Clean Look" that took over on TikTok. Both of which feature minimalist gold jewellery and hair swept up in a hair claw.

This style, of course, then became synonymous with Instagram style and the fashion influencers who took inspiration from fashions IT girls like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner to recreate their own look with the classic 90s hair accessory. We're all for it. We love being able to create the perfect updo that looks good with minimal effort, but whilst we love a classic hair claw, sometimes you have to up your hair game.

How we're styling it

As with the resurgence of many trends, they get a modern update. No more flimsy plastic clips that only come in black or brown. Choose pieces in bold colours, fun designs and different sizes to play with this look and make it your own. If you're going to a festival, grab two smaller clips for a half-up, half-down look with two mini pigtails. For a more classic look, style a large tortoiseshell piece with simple gold jewellery and a linen shirt. To nail an easy, beachy look, twist your ponytail up and clip in place, letting the rest fall loose over the top of the clip and pulling out some face-framing strands.

With so many ways to wear this reborn hair accessory, it won't be going anywhere soon. Get it whilst it's hot.
